Mme. Ruschiensky’s Routines & Procedures for the 2020/2021 School Year

Entering the school:

Students must enter the school in a socially distance orderly fashion. Students will use the hand sanitizer provided at the door when they enter. Students will always enter and exit at the doors near the gym. They must always walk single file down the hallway while social distancing. There will be no running, talking or screaming in the school. It is encouraged that students in grade 1 and grade 2 wear a mask but they don’t have to.

Entering the classroom:

Mornings: Every morning students should enter the classroom quietly and quickly, hanging up their backpacks, jackets and any other belongings neatly in their assigned lockers/black plastic bags. After hanging up their belongings they should remove their agendas from their backpacks and proceed quietly and quickly to their assigned desks. Once in their desks they should open their agenda to the appropriate date where their parents have signed and wait quietly for O’Canada, prayer and announcements to start. After the announcements are finished, I will come around to check student’s agendas for parent signatures and/or important notes. Once I have done so, students may put their agendas in their back packs and return quietly to their desks putting their heads down.

Before and After Recess: Students should walk in the hallways while exiting and entering the classroom and school. They must carry their outdoor shoes from the mat outside our classroom to the doors to go outside. When entering they must carry their shoes from the door to the mat outside of our classroom where they must set their shoes neatly. The bell does not dismiss the students, the teacher does. The students should exit the classroom quietly while walking. They should not run until they are outside. Once the students have entered the school after recess they should NOT be talking, running, stopping to chat with their friends or playing with things. Once they have entered the classroom they should head straight to their desks, sitting forward quietly and ready for any instructions given by the teacher. Students have been given specific instruction as to what they should be doing during an indoor recess.

Agenda Check:

Each night parents should check their child’s agenda for important information that may have been sent home, homework, or something exciting we did or are going to be doing at school. To show that parents checked their child’s agenda they should sign just below the messages. If there is no message parents should still sign on the current date. Each morning the students will receive my initials for getting one of their parent’s signatures. If your child receives five signatures by the end of each week they will receive a prize from Mme. Ruschiensky. Agenda’s should always be kept in a plastic Ziploc bag. Any homework and/or important letters, orders forms, etc. that are sent home will be kept in this plastic bag as well.

O’Canada, Prayer and Announcements:

As soon as the intercom comes on with O’Canada, all students should stand up on the left hand side of their desks facing forward with their hands at their sides singing along with O’Canada. There should be no leaning on desks or playing with objects. After O’Canada they must remain standing for the prayer. After the prayer is finished students may sit down in their desks. They must remain completely quiet before, during and after O’Canada, prayer and announcements.

Staggered Recess Times:

8:45 - Students enter the school and go directly to their classrooms

10:30-10:45 - Morning recess

12:25-12:40 - Lunch recess

2:10-2:25 - Afternoon Recess

3:35 - Students are dismissed for the day for walking home, parents pick up or riding the bus

Snack “Collation” (10:45 a.m.):
Students will eat their snack every day after the first recess at 10:45a.m.. They will have time to eat one small snack from their lunch box. They must eat it sitting quietly in their desk. Any garbage must be thrown in the garbage can. Empty juice boxes should be recycled in the bin just outside of our classroom with the straws removed.

“J’ai fini”:

“J’ai fini” is a duo tang filled with extra worksheets for students if they have completed their assigned work. There is also a duo tang called “J’ai fini: Mathématiques” for students if they have completed their Math assignment. These two duo-tangs give the students who have completed their work ahead of others something to do and allow for extra practice on their Math, French Language Arts and fine motor skills.

File Folders:
Each student will receive and decorate a file folder for the year. This file folder will be used for student worksheets, exams, tests, quizzes, art and/or any other work that needs to go home. File folders will be sent home and returned to the school throughout the year. At the end of the school year students may keep their file folders.

Shiny Apple(s) of the Month “Pomme Brillante”:
At the end of each month one or more student (s) will be acknowledged as the Shiny Apple(s) of the Month. The student(s) who accumulate(s) the most checks marks on the “Shiny Apple of the Month” chart will be rewarded with a prize for good behaviour and be known as the “Shiny Apple of the Month”! Check marks are given to students who are caught doing something good like being generous, kind, caring, helpful, hardworking, etc. The check marks reinforce good behaviour by acknowledging and encouraging it. A student will lose a check mark or receive an “X” for misbehaving by breaking school rules or classroom rules, being mean to others, etc. This activity is to acknowledge the positive behaviours in students rather than always the negative behaviours.

Library Book Exchange/Assemblies/Field Trips: TBD.
